Research

Mario Diaz de Leon is a composer, performer, and recording artist, whose creative work encompasses modern classical music, experimental electronic music, improvisation, and metal.

General Information

Diaz de Leon's music has been celebrated for its “hallucinatory intensity” (New York Times), “snarling exuberance” (Pitchfork), “remarkable textures and vivid atmosphere” (New Yorker Magazine), and coupling of “crystalline clarity with the disorienting turbulence of a sonic vortex” (Wire Magazine). Noted for their bold combination of acoustic instruments and electronics, his classical compositions are documented on four full length recordings, realized in collaboration with International Contemporary Ensemble, Talea Ensemble, TAK Ensemble, and soloists Claire Chase, Joshua Rubin, Rebekah Heller, and Mariel Roberts.

His works and performances have been presented at venues including Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Sacrum Profanum Festival (Poland), San Francisco Symphony SoundBox, Donaufestival (Austria), CTM Festival (Berlin), FIMAV (Victoriaville, Quebec), Chicago Symphony Center, Hakuju Hall (Tokyo), Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, Southbank Centre (London), Venice Biennale, Lucerne Festival (Switzerland), Musica Nova Helsinki (Finland), National Gallery of Art (DC), Ojai Music Festival (California), Roulette (Brooklyn), and The Kitchen (NYC). He has worked with the Denovali record label since 2012, and his scores are published by Project Schott New York.

Diaz de Leon holds a doctorate from Columbia University, where his principal teachers included George Lewis and Fabien Lévy. He received his BM in TIMARA (Technology in Music and Related Arts) from Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
