Cognitive Neural Observational Study $36,000 2022-present
Through grant awarded from Stevens Institute Office of Research, a G. Tec 34 node EEG cap was acquired.
Initial implementation with Dr. George McConnell to identify brain activity while learning and performing classical music in addition to performing freeform improvisation. The study explores if stimulation in those brain centers can be applied as intervention to patients of dementia and Parkinson’s disease through music performance.

NSF DRK-12 Grant proposal $450,000 Awarded 9/2017
“Multimedia Immersion Inspires STEM Learning”
Principle Investigator with Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) at Stevens to develop a high school curriculum to engage students in STEM learning through an immersive creative process using animation, music composition/production and sound design. First round of research and development conducted summer/fall 2017. A nine-week curriculum with forty-five lesson plans was created. Grant provides for 10 High school teachers to run the created pilot program in Spring 2018.

“The Shannon Effect” - Nokia Bell Labs 1/2015-4/28/2016
Principle Investigator in collaborative research agreement to develop real time automated control systems for performance technologies such as lighting, audio and projection that are manipulated by performers and audience without traditional operator control.

Clinical Researcher - Hackensack University Medical Center 8/2013 to 2018
Co Principle Investigator for the Trauma Research Administrative Group "TRAG Team" researching how the sound profiles, of individual units within the hospital, contribute to cases of delirium and increased cognitive impairment over the course of a hospital stay.

General Information

Rob Harari has versatility in the field of audio and music as a music producer, educator, composer, sound designer, audio engineer, musician and researcher. Over a 35-year career in music, Harari has worked on multiple Grammy nominated albums, Emmy Award winning programming for children educational content on PBS and musical themes for major sporting events, composed songs individually and collaboratively for albums ranging from rock, pop and jazz to spoken word. He contributed soundtracks to multiple TV shows, Documentaries, and in 2005, Harari was commissioned as Sound Designer and recordist of the binaural project “The Hiding” for the Holocaust Museum and Study Center of Rockland County, N.Y., which has received international accolades. Harari mixed shows as the Production Manager and FOH mixer for Gregory Hines and Savion Glover including Glover's work; “Bring In ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk (4 Tony Awards 2006), Live (Barbra Streisand), Cannes Film Festival, and the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, and also in the Spike Lee film “Bamboozled”.

Adding academia to his resume in the mid naught's, Harari is full now Professor and Director of the Music & Technology Program at Stevens Institute of Technology. This association has led to various research interests including: the field of Psychoacoustics through a collaboration with Hackensack University Medical Center, awarded a $500K grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF)DRK-12 program titled, "Multimedia Immersion Inspires STEM Interest". to develop a high school curriculum that tie production techniques in animation and audio with scientific principles of physics, systems integration design, computer science and NGSS appropriate standards for high school students. In 2016, he collaborated with the research group at Nokia Bell Labs as the first artist since the 1960’s as part of Experiments in Arts and Technology (E.A.T.), Harari authored and produced “The Shannon Effect”, a celebration of Claude E Shannon, the father of Information Theory.
More recently, Harari has partnered with Neural Engineer Dr George McConnell in an observational study of brain activity during the cognitive process of learning music through to performance while wearing a 32 node EEG cap to capture real time brain activity. The thesis is to determine if there is a correlation between these areas of activity with areas of restricted activity in Alzheimer and Parkinson's patients to design a protocol to "re-ignite" those neural networks through musical performance.
